The instinctive sub-types, also called variants, provides insight into the predominant preoccupation people have in their impulses and more gut-type reactions. This layer of information is particularly valuable when considering relationship issues. Generally people have all three the instinctive sub-types available to them, but one of these will be more easily accessible and more frequently used by them than the others. In some of the literature, people refer to sub-type layering to exemplify how all three the sub-types relate to each other.
